FAQ:

  1. Is the flat wire spring compatible with a full length guide rod? Yes-Only with the full length flat wire guide rod (#25GRFW). The inner diameter of the flat wire spring is smaller than a conventional round wire spring requiring a flat wire specific guide rod.
  2. Is a Shok Buff required? A Shok-Buff is included but optional on the 5” flatwire guide rod. It is not recommended for use on the 4” kit since it can reduce slide travel.
  3. Can I shoot +P ammunition with this kit? Yes-since flat wire springs don’t lose their length over time like round wire springs they cushion your frame more effectively over time. Flat wire springs also compress in a more linear fashion which makes them more tolerant of a wider variety of loads and grips.

Works great. Shock buff not so much

Posted by PJ on Dec 28th 2025

The sping is great for range .45 auto rounds. It absolutely made it feel for liner. Much like a compact 9mm. Still the same heavy jump as the slide bottoms out. My only complaint is the shock buff. I bought a RK IL GI $300 and had issues with feeding. Bought snap caps and tuned the extractor. Then replaced the stock system with this. Now the feeding issues were different. Kill the shock buff and BIG boom guys great recoil and super reliable. 50 rounds no failure 18 round split between a 8mag and 10mag rapid fire right after taking that shock buff out. Couldn't recommend the spring more.

Less than ideal reliability out of my Springfield Garrison .45

Posted by JohnnytheRaven on Dec 7th 2025

Some time ago, my WC 18.5 lb round wire spring was wearing out in my full size 5 inch Springfield Garrison .45 ACP. So I decided to get a much more durable spring and bought a 17 lb flat wire spring. I had put my Garrison .45 through a couple of shooting sessions 100 rounds each with the new 17 lb spring and 230 grain FMJ hardballs. The flat wire spring handled recoil much better than the conventional round wire spring! Much smoother and more linear! Despite this, during my first session with the 17 lb flat wire spring I experienced 2 failures to feed. I thought, maybe the spring just needs a break in. I was wrong! During my second session, I experienced 3 failures to feed and 1 failure to eject. These experiences have led me to believe that the 17 lb flat wire spring is too light for full sized 1911s in .45 when shooting 230 grain loads. Too light to push the steel slide back into battery every time. And so I swapped the 17 lb flat wire spring for a 20 lb flat wire spring. Problem solved!

    Excellent product!

I shoot a full-size 1911 and recently purchased the RECOIL SPRING KIT, Flat Wire, .45 ACP, FULL-SIZE, 17LB kit. With Zero 185 SWC HP's, this is an absolute joy to shoot! It's a push, not a snap. I want one for my Commander now! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS!!!

    High Quality

Works great, very pleased, and price for the part is very reasonable. Shipping however was very high, and relatively slow, compared to other companies.

    Tisas failure to feed

Posted by Carl on Aug 17th 2023

Was experiencing failure to extract, so I got the stainless extractor and this flat wire spring (installed with it's guide rod and buffer) for my Tisas 5" tactical. Ejects beautifully each time, now. But, won't go fully into battery 4-5 times a magazine, every mag, including two WC mags. Stays open about a half inch or so, tap the back of the slide to close it. Going back to the old spring and take it from there.

The First Upgrade You Should Make.

Posted by Thor on Jul 31st 2022

Ordered this product for my RIA FS Tactical to replace the 20# stock spring and for the Shok-buff. After changing it out I immediately noticed the difference. It cycles much smoother, and noticed a slight drop in recoil. In my opinion, the best thing you can do for your 1911.

    Next Level!

This kit was definitely worth the $20. The Flat-wire recoil kit took my Taurus 1911 to the next level. You can feel the difference when you rack the slide: it’s smoother, faster, and firmer. The recoil buffer works like a charm as well.
