Caliber Notes: The .338 Federal from Wilson Combat is ideal for any medium-large game hunting in North America including trophy wild hogs, elk, moose and bear. Considered by some ballistic experts to be the ideal cartridge for North American big game, the .338 Federal is also known for superb accuracy and stopping power in a controllable package. The .338 exhibits impressive downrange ballistics comparable to 7mm Magnum or .338 Winchester Magnum class cartridges, with the added ability to fit in a lightweight short action semi-auto like our BILLet-AR rifles. The .338 Federal cartridge is based off of the .308 Winchester and uses the same receivers, bolt and magazines as its parent cartridge without any loss in capacity.

I put this barrel on a Bear Creek side charger upper and it shoots 1/2 MOA with Federal Fusion 200 grain soft points. I will handload for it when I have time but I'm perfectly happy with the Federal load.
Since it is only a .308 case (I use 7.62x51 NATO cases in a pinch, but they all work in my AR-10) necked up to .338 caliber, It is easy to reload and find cases to neck up. I have a 2nd hand Wilson barrel that I personally have put approximately 300 to 400 rounds through. It is still dead accurate, and damn the cartridge hits hard! I'm considering buying another barrel and building one for my son who lives in Alaska...
I don't understand why Wilson Combat makes this caliber in a barrel if you can't find ammo. Unless you reload, (try to find brass) I would not buy.
Bought one of these several years ago for a build that took sometime to complete. Finally assembled with a third party receiver set. Topped with ATN 5-20 Day-Night for Hog Hunting. Using 180 & 200 grain loads this barrel is lights out for prey. Three rounds to zero only because I like to work one adjustment at the time. Moved from 50 to 100 yards dead on. Later that evening stopped a large Boar in his tracks. One shot behind the shoulder bullet traveled across and destroyed the opposite shoulder coming to a stop under the hide with a perfect mushroom. I have used this gun on multiple hunts with same results. Due to the accuracy of this barrel I'm taking it on a once in a lifetime (for me) Moose hunt.
