Wilson Combat

Before the modern beavertail, there was the upswept grip safety. Early custom pistolsmiths built them for competitors and serious shooters who wanted to grip the 1911 higher without hammer bite, and they became a signature of the classic custom 1911.

The Retro Upswept Grip Safety brings that look back. Its gentle upward sweep follows the profile of those early custom-shop safeties. It gives the hand more room than the original GI-style safety while keeping a slim, period-correct silhouette.

True to its roots, it has no memory bump. The smooth, uninterrupted contour runs clean from the tang to the base, just as the originals did.

The classic look comes with modern fit. It’s designed for the Wilson Combat compound radius frame cut, which blends the safety tightly into the frame for a seamless, hand-fitted look and a comfortable, consistent grip. For frames that need fitting, the Wilson Combat Beavertail Grip Safety Fitting Jig (#402) mounts to the hammer and thumb safety pin holes. It serves as a filing guide to help prevent over-cutting the frame.

Like every Bullet Proof® part, it’s machined from solid carbon steel, not cast or metal-injection molded, for exact dimensions and long-term durability. A matte blued finish matches traditional blued slides and frames.

  • Bullet Proof® quality, machined from solid carbon steel
  • Upswept retro profile inspired by early custom-shop grip safeties
  • Smooth contour with no memory bump, true to the original style
  • Fits the Wilson Combat compound radius frame cut
  • Higher grip than GI-style safeties, with protection from hammer bite
  • Blued finish
  • For best results, use our fitting jig, part #402
